WHY?!
Today, many people have come to feel
disconnected from their communities and even from themselves as our modern society creates
lives that are characterized by overwork and stress. Such stress ultimately contributes to
increased incidences of depression, 'dis-ease' and hostility. Over the past century, we
have witnessed tremendous advances in technology which, while providing us with incredible
new opportunities, have also presented us with new challenges. In this information age
where people are societys most important asset, the ability to relate, communicate
and work together effectively is now, more than ever, a critical success factor.
While being witness to technological breakthroughs in communication, our society is also
experiencing a breakdown in trust and loss of faith in established institutions
(political, religious and corporate) that in the past provided people with a sense of
belonging and security. As a result, there is a "common sense of not belonging that
pervades the new society born of the new economy", says business leader and author,
John Dalla Costa. According to a United Nations report, stress is reaching epidemic
proportions and at this current rate, "malignant sadness" may well become the
second most debilitating disease by the year 2020, predicts World Health
Organizations Head of epidemiology, Dr. Christopher Murray.
"...to me, life is
simple, we've made it complicated... the challenge is to get back in touch with it's
simplicity."
